As a result of the Local Governance Reform in New Brunswick, which was initiated by the White Paper in November of 2021, Butternut Valley Rural Community (Entity 79) was formed by joining a portion of the local service district of Brunswick, the local service district of Studholm, portions of the local service district of Johnston, and the local service district of Havelock. Butternut Valley has four wards and the municipal council consists of one mayor and four councillors. The Municipality currently employs one full-time staff member in the position of Chief Administrative Officer, who is also responsible for clerical duties, financial duties, and other management and administrative duties.
